Step 1 - Become a tester by joining the Discord. All of the updates and downloads are on Discord. You're also going to want to join the Discord if you want to find other players that are testing out the build for Netplay.

Use the #netplay channel to find other players. Read the #start channel and figure what region you are based on the map. Add your region to the end of your name like the example and join the netplay voice channel to show you're active and trying to find a match. If you don't want to use your mic, just mute/deafen yourself. This helps everyone know who is willing to play. Step 2 - Go to the #updates channel and download the latest version of the Faster Melee Netplay Build We now support Windows, Mac, and Linux as of FM v5.5 BETA.

Step 3 - Other Downloads If you already use Netplay on SmashLadder, you probably don't have to worry about this step. But in case you get an error when you try to run Dolphin, make sure you have the proper.dll files and Microsoft's Visual C Redistributable Pack. You can download it if you need it. Also, if you don't have Direct X, you might not be seeing XAudio2 and your sound might be messed up. Here's a download for that.

You also want to make sure you have the right drivers for your Wii-U Adapter. If you didn't already know, it is crucial to use a Wii-U Adapter (either the official Nintendo one or the Mayflash Wii-U version).

Without one of these adapters, you'll be getting extra lag from not using Native Support - a feature which dramatically helps handle input polling. Here's a guide on how to set that up. Also check out the Dolphin Wiki for instructions on using the Wii-U adapters with Native Support on Mac and Linux. Step 4 - Config and Setup Everything should already be setup when you download the FM Netplay build.

You might want to adjust your graphics resolution and make sure it's set appropriately - but other than that, there's not much to setup. This build is also portable where everything stays in it's own folder and you can move it around if you want to. What you change in this build of Dolphin won't affect other builds you may have on your computer.

ALSO - make sure you set your monitor to 120Hz if it's a 144Hz monitor. Yes it's 1.39ms more lag but it's worth it for the much smoother motion and reduced tearing and stutter from being a multiple of 60. Step 5 - Setting up Netplay We're using vanilla SSBM 1.02. In general, buffer is set with 'ping / 8' then you round up.

In terms of getting it equal with console, that depends on your setup. If you have a regular LCD non-gaming then it'll probably be more accurate to set your buffer to 5-6. If you have a good monitor that's low-latency, you can easily go up to 9-10. Step 6 - Finding Players The way this works is you look at the map in the #start channel and right click your name and edit it so you add your region like the examples. Then in the #netplay channel, you can use '@' to challenge players or '@#' for regions.

Since I'm playing out of Chicago, a typical @ example for me would look like this: @#MW @#EC @#C - anyone down to play? This gets the region I'm in (MW), and the surrounding regions. If I was still out of luck, I could add others like S, ON, NE, N, etc. Once I submit that, all of the players online in those regions will get an alert that someone is looking for a game. If you want to get alerted when players tag the region you're in, add a region role with Faster Bot in #support.

Type in!help to learn how to use Faster Bot. Step 7 - Share your results Use the #chat channel in our Discord to share your results and if everything worked out for you. If not, use the #support channel and explain your problem in detail in one big message and we will try to help you. If you're lagging or not getting smooth gameplay, that it could be that your computer is not good enough to run Dolphin at the full speed. HD Textures -. Step 1 - Become a tester by joining the Discord.

All of the updates and downloads are on Discord. If we post a new version or update, you're going to want to be a part of the Discord. Also if you have any issues, this is the place to find help. Step 2 - Go to the #updates channel and look under pinned to find the latest version of Faster Melee HD Step 3 - Install Extract your GALE01 Folder from the zip file into your Dolphin textures directory at: ' User Load Textures' - then open Dolphin and open your Graphics settings and go to the Advanced tab. Check 'Load Custom Textures' and 'Prefetch Custom Textures'.

Also, make sure you have Dolphin Internal Resolution set to something higher than Native! Step 4 - Share your results Notes: This is compatible with all versions of Dolphin that support this feature. It is also totally client side and does not desync for netplay if your opponent does not have the textures or has different textures. We support free speech Some users don't get this concept.

We do not kick or ban anyone based on language alone. Swearing, trash talk, etc is allowed.

No distasteful content This is generally spam, gore, and porn. Sometimes there are exceptions in #random with proper context. No unqualified users If you have no idea what you're doing, there's a right and wrong way to learn. If you read all the guides, watched videos, asked for help in direct messages, and you still are having trouble, feel free to use #support. If you don't know anything and you expect us to hold your hand through the entire process, the FM Discord isn't for you.

There are two exceptions - Insiders and Top Players. No Wi-Fi It's cancer. No anime Exceptions are American cartoons and Dragon Ball with context. No piracy We do not support piracy. If you want to participate, buy the game and make your own personal backup. Do not ask where to get illegal ROMs. More on Support Do not @ Staff unless there is an actual important problem.

If you need support, go into the #support channel and type out your problem. We will get to it when we are available. Read the pinned posts, guides, and FAQ first! In addition to this, do not ever say something like, 'hey i have a question'. Depending on what mood we're in, we might just kick you right there. Ask your question in full - don't try and bait a live discussion.

For long term issues, and bug reports, we recommend using the. Exceptions are Insiders and Top Players. Staff has Executive Privilege and Discretion Staff may break rules occasionally and can also choose to not enforce certain rules some of the time. Staff may kick or ban you for a reason not on the rules. Top Player Privilege When there are disputes, the higher ranked player generally is favored. Also, Top players (black belts and up) do not want to be tagged arbitrarily.

Do not tag top players inappropriately. If we see this or get a report from a Top player, this is grounds for a ban. Obviously if you're looking for matches and are at an appropriate skill level and you see them also active in a chat, this is appropriate. If you're a figure head or working on a special project that involves them, that's probably appropriate. If you're a random and in #chat with a low rank or no rank and just type '@leffen insert something random', that is inappropriate. Use channels properly #chat is for general Melee discussion. #netplay is specifically for finding matches - you may have some conversation pertaining to the games you just played.

#ranked is like #netplay except it's specifically for finding ranked matches. For netplay based channels, do not Hit and Run. Read the other guide about it below. #support should only be used for help and bot commands. #real-talk can be used as an alternative general chat and doesn't have to be Melee oriented discussion - however no memes or cheap content should be posted there. #random can have virtually any content except anime, gore, porn, etc. Why is my controller working with regular Dolphin but not FM?

The Wii-U adapter can only work with one instance of Dolphin. Make sure to close all versions of Dolphin THEN start FM. Does FM work with other games? Yes, just like normal Dolphin - no need to switch back and forth. Also Ishiiruka has better graphics. Does FM work with other Melee mods?

Works with 20xx 3.02, 20xx 4.05, and the netplay community build - just disable the 'Faster Melee Netplay Settings' gecko code. Why is my 20XX debug menu glitchy?

For some reason this is a bug with 20xx and FM v4.4. It is fixed with v4.9+ Are there Mac and Linux versions? We support all platforms now.

Check for the latest builds in #updates How do I turn on rumble? Go to controllers and hit configure; then check the rumble box. Can I play 4:3 if my opponent is playing Widescreen? No it will desync How do I switch back and forth from Widescreen and 4:3? For widescreen, make sure you have the Widescreen 16:9 gecko code on and set your aspect ratio in graphics to 'Force 16:9'. For 4:3, make sure you uncheck the Widescreen 16:9 gecko code and set your aspect ratio in graphics to 'Force 73:60'. How do I set the buffer?

In general, buffer is set with 'ping / 8' then you round up. In terms of getting it equal with console, that depends on your setup. If you have a regular LCD non-gaming then it'll probably be more accurate to set your buffer to 5-6. If you have a good monitor that's low-latency, you can easily go up to 9-10. How do I play offline so it's equal to console lag?

You can enable regular NVIDIA/AMD VSync. You can turn off the lag reduction by unchecking the Lag Reduction gecko code. You can also just create an empty netplay lobby and set the buffer manually depending on your setup. Why is 20XX not starting when I try to select a stage?

Or Why is my cursor stuck at stage select? This has been fixed with v5.6+ as 20XX settings are separate. If you're using an older version, you have to disable the 'Faster Melee Netplay Settings' in gecko codes. Why could I run -7840 fine but I lag with FM? Even though Ishiiruka FM is extremely efficient compared to the old 120fps build, it still takes slightly more resources both in terms of CPU and network. There might be a few that can run stock but not with lag reductions.

How To Get Netplay For Melee

We have implemented RANKS - It will be in terms of BELTS like Jiu-Jitsu. White Belt - Blue Belt - Purple Belt - Brown Belt - Black Belt White Belt: You're not a threat and virtually never take games from purple belts. You're still learning the basic fundamentals of the game. You can take games from blue belts. Fundamentals aren't just understanding what buttons do what in the game, but the dynamics of spacing, DI, and the general meta of the characters that the player is utilizing. Inconsistency is the hallmark of a white belt. Most opponents can beat you by just waiting for you to lose the game.

Netplay

Blue Belt: You understand all the basic concepts, can beat all the white belts, and have most likely been playing for over a year and a half. You can take games from purple belts. You're still white in terms of mix ups, and have developed a very solid style of play; however, there are gaps of skill in your cohesive game plan, which is often only singular in nature. Adaptation is often slow and though not nearly as inconsistent as a White Belt, you do have moments where you flounder and regress with bad choices in neutral. Purple Belt: You have a large amount of knowledge on the game, occasionally take games from higher ranked players, and can win small locals. You're a threat in bigger tournament brackets and have probably been playing for over 2 years. Your punishment game has most likely developed towards needing fewer mistakes to take games.

In general everything has tightened up due to your ability to play and learn from your experiences with skilled players. Brown Belt: You could actually win a large monthly or place top 3 consistently.

You not only take games from high ranked players, but you can occasionally take sets. You've been playing for around 3.5 years. To even the trained eye, you appear close or almost on par with black belts. Your issues stem from what feel like a thousand little mistakes that are the difference between you winning and losing. Optimization and cleaning up play is what drives this belt range.

Black Belt: You're the favorite to win events with no top players. You're a top 120 player or at the top 120 player skill level.

This is not necessarily based on recent results. For example, someone like Lord (NorCal Falcon), he is generally considered inactive and not on the MIOM Top 100. However, we still know his skill level to be that of Black Belt. There are also 3 extra black belt ranks: 1st degree, 2nd degree, and Red Belt.

Red Belt is reserved only for the top players in the world - you cannot achieve this rank through placement. To get a rank you need to play a ranked player and they have to agree with the rank. You play 10 games and must win at least 5. For Blue Belts and higher, you must do this against at least 2 different players of different mains - then they msg rank manager, mod, or a skill-talk member. After some discussion with the other skill-talk members, higher belts, and the ranking player, it is then determined if you actually deserve the promotion. Hit and Runs -. There is a problem with a lot of newer players on here who don't understand that this is not matchmaking.

This is not SmashLadder. It is not a 20 second period between finding a new match. This is about high quality hardcore training. And what I keep seeing is players ask 'games?' And then after 5min I find them a match or someone responds to them - and they are gone. This is a hit and run.

You get one warning - then after that, it's a 3 day ban. You need to change your mentality for FM.

Like I said above, it is not just a simple matchmaking system where you play one set and move on to the next opponent. This is more like you play for 20-30 minutes and evaluate how to get better with your opponent.

So think in terms of longer sessions per player that are higher quality rather than shorter sessions that are just 'whatever'. There are less opponents on FM obviously but there should be enough where you can find someone willing to play within 10-15min tops.

If you can't wait 10min, then you're doing it wrong. Practice your tech skill, go online and research stuff as you wait.

Because time after time again I see players come in only 10min apart and they totally miss each other because they have no patience. There is an alert system with Discord. You will get an alert if someone tags you back. If you just have a little more patience as we grow, you'll be much more likely to find a match. And lastly, make sure you read the and #start.

You need to tag multiple regions when you search and you need to tag players back when you're responding to them otherwise they will not get an alert. Getting the alert is crucial because chances are they are browsing the web or doing something other than staring at the Discord chat while they wait. Last updated on 7/13/2017.
